The Fiscal Insanity of the New York State Government Now Includes Funding for The City

6/1/2026

If ever you thought that Governor Kathy Hochul’s corruption and lack of regard for the citizens of New Amsterdam (Upstate New York) could not get any more blatant, just think of the $4 billion that she plans to hand over to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his next budget (almost $8 billion over two years). Yes, the state is already $56 billion in debt, but hey, why not dish out a few more dollars from hardworking upstate families to provide to the de factor seat of power for our “empire?” New York state legislators cannot even pass the planned $262 to $268 billion budget after thirteen extensions, but the governor is sure happy to try to appease New York city voters ahead of the gubernatorial race in November.
Obviously, New York State legislators are a bit delusional and could use some mandatory classes on fiscal responsibility and balancing budgets, but when federal and state policies are helping to cause increased costs for average New Yorkers and hurt overall welfare, handing out money to New York City is not at the top of their priority list. Perhaps paying for gas, groceries, and necessities for children are a bit more important to families than closing a budget gap in the country’s largest city. This is a purely political move that has the potential to put some of us into the poor house. More and more residents of New Amsterdam are being squeezed by federal and state taxes and cost of living increases (including with events in the Middle East and mismanagement at the state level), and many of us have had to take on extra debt just to be able to live paycheck-by-paycheck. The New York City-dominated legislature has no concern for the average citizen, and it will continue to squander our taxes on social programs and budget-line items that do not benefit most of us and waste money in the process.

Now, the governor wants us to bail out New York City, as if we can afford to do so. When did fiscal insanity become the norm? We can be sure that her majesty continues to live in her castle in Albany and will have access to the most luxurious lifestyle imaginable, but the upstate peasants have to continue struggling just to have their money pried from them for no real reason whatsoever. We let the socialists decide how our money is to be spent to redistribute wealth, and they control our means of production by regulating and taxing all of our upstate businesses and deciding which industries are permitted and to what degree. We the people have no choice over these policies, and we must either silently comply, being too busy with our routine lives to pay any attention, or rise up in some form.
We do have a choice over the future of our state, however. We can refuse to comply and politely decline to pay taxes or obey burdensome regulations like our founding father would have done, though this may come with personal or business consequences. Another way to force change would be to pressure state and county legislators to adopt home rule resolutions and support bills S3484 and A03778 in the State Senate and Assembly, respectively. A massive influx of emails and phone calls to politicians may prompt some of them to actually respond or answer the question of whether the state should be divided into separate regions. Giving New Amsterdam autonomy to act independently, with our own governor and legislature, from New York City (and its suburbs) would help ensure prosperity for future generations.
