This Land Is Our Land: New Amsterdam as a New Political Entity

8/9/2025

Upstate New York; being a land of rolling hills, wild forests, numerous lakes, mighty rivers, sprawling farms, small towns, and historical monuments; has a unique culture that is distinct from the hustle and bustle of the largest city in the United States of America. As such, it ought to be thought of as its own political entity, even if full statehood is unachievable at this time. At the very least, the people can help drive toward the goal of autonomy under the broader New York State umbrella, thus eliminating the influence of downstate on how we choose to subsist.
Like any political entity, New Amsterdam, as Upstate New York is referred to under the Divide New York State plan, should have its own flag that can be waived proudly to proclaim its independence from New York City. At every turn, take the opportunity to refer to our great land as New Amsterdam. When someone asks you where you are from, instead of saying New York and having people from other regions of the United States or in other countries around the world automatically associate you with the Big Apple, claim that you are from New Amsterdam. When they look at you in confusion as to where that could possibly be, explain that we are forming a new political entity out of Upstate New York.
We are distinct from the City, and as such, we should no longer be included under its control. Whether we are recognized for what we are by the rest of the world matters less than us having the frame of mind that we are what we already know we are. It is much easier to fight for what you believe in when you believe in it yourself. Let us make this a reality and push toward what most New Yorkers know in their hearts to be true: that New Amsterdam and New York City are two completely different worlds. As such, the state’s main population center should be free to enjoy their land without the need to spend resources on our behalf, and likewise, we should have the choice on how we want to attract businesses and live our less urban lives.
This is our land, and as such, we should enjoy the rewards of its riches and the fruits of our labor. Politicians who are separated from our daily struggles and who do not comprehend the concept of property and individual rights should no longer be able to dictate to us what we do. Debilitating regulations and taxes have forced industry out and left many of our towns to turn into fragments of what they once were, but all of that can change with separation.
The United States was founded on the principle of secession and self-governance based on the will of the people, and as the spirit of 1776 would have it, any group of people that is unhappy with its political arrangement has the right to change the situation and rid itself of the government that has bounded it over time. Political boundaries should not be thought of as static lines on a map, and they can change with each and every generation or century as need be.
Ultimately, the choice is ours. Do we want to keep living under the rules dictated to us from a single city, or do we want to make New Amsterdam a reality and not just a nice thought? If achieving victory through the political process is not possible because the politicians will not hear us out, other measures may need to be taken to ensure that we are free from the one-party rule that has gripped our state and forced us to become slaves to the status quo system. It is up to us whether we want to obey the authority of the governor and follow the rules of the bureaucracy. This is our land, and we should treat it as such.
